How we make our podcasts.

Each week record 2 RĀroa RECOMMENDS, and rĀroa reviews episodes.

Let’s take you through the steps:

Stage 1:

Creating Show Notes

At the start of this year, we put the call out for anyone who’d like to be involved with creating a podcast. We ended up with over 100 students wanting to be involved in areas of production like Ideation, Recording Tech, Editing, Creating Show Art and of course Hosting and Guesting on episodes. A large pool of students from across the school came together to create our master list of recommendations early in Term 1, which became the framework for students to pick which episodes they would want to appear on.

Stage 2: Recording

The next stage involves pulling our team of students together for a day in the Studio Space (Whakaahua Pāpāho). We take one host, and three to four guests, as well as students to sort out the recording tech and editing afterwards. Using a shared Google Slides for show note, we then start recording our conversations about this week’s pick. There’s a lot to learn about making good audio content, but there’s no better way to learn than doing!

Stage 3: Editing

After each guest has recorded their parts on both shows, we leave things in the capable hands of our editors. Their role is to cut out any mistakes, long pauses or weird sounds. We edit using Logic Pro, and it’s quite a skill to learn and then edit an episode all in one day! The final steps are adding in our theme music (Hotshots 2 by Niklas Alström) and adding compressors to each track. Finally, we post our episodes to this website, where an RSS feed picks them up for Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
